I have to do what you see on this card

17 Jan

There's always K.P. wherever the Army goes, as Camp Haan rookies soon learn.

Camp Haan, California

Dear Pop,

I hope we do get the raise from the railroad. I’m glad it won’t cost so much to come home when I get to L.A. I’m glad you all liked the dates. I have to do what you see on this card about every two months.

Love, Tom

Dear Pop

This is the first chance I’ve had to write since we got back from the problem. Our problems are over now and soon we will go back to Haan. I just got paid and I have $62 on hand now.

Going on another field problem

Dear Pop

We are going out on another field problem tomorrow. These problems are the hardest part of our training and I’ll be glad when they’re over. We’ll be back in Haan in a couple of weeks and I can spend some time in the Service Club.

Dear Pop

Here’s one of the chapel like we have at Camp Haan. They’re all pretty nice and have organs and everything. We just came off our five day problem and I’m pretty tired. I have some more cards of Camp Haan and Irwin which I will send.

On back: Camp Haan, California, located about sixty-five miles from Los Angeles, in Riverside County, California, is the largest anti-aircraft artillery training center in the nation. When the final battle of this war has been won for the United Nations, a significant part will have been played by thousands of men who first received their training in warfare at this post.

I just had a good meal

Dear Mom,

I just had a good meal. It cost $1.50 but it was worth it after eating army chow for so long out of mess kits. We haven’t eaten out of dishes since the first time we left Haan. And we sit on the ground to eat now. The laundry service is better and I don’t have to do my own washing now.

I have seen a few of these yuccas out here but not many.
